Author Notes: John Paxton, who edited The Statesman's Year-Book from 1969 to 1990, is the author of many books on international affairs, among them A Dictionary of the European Communities, Encyclopedia of Russian History, European Political Facts, 1990-1996 (with Chris Cook) and Companion to the French Revolution. He is also the compiler of The Penguin Dictionary of Abbreviations, The Penguin Dictionary of Proper Names (with Geoffrey Payton), and The Penguin Encyclopedia of Places (with W. G. Moore).
Edward W. Knappman is the vice president of New England Publishing Associates, a literary agency and book producer. Prior to that he was the publisher of Facts On File. New England Publishing Associates has produced many highly regarded reference works, including H. W. Wilson's recently published Facts About the American Wars, Facts About the Congress, and Facts About the Supreme Court of the United States.
