Author Notes: Henry Sears Lodge Jr. was born in Boston, Massachusetts on October 20, 1958. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1981 and a medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1985. After completing a three-year residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in Manhattan, he became an internist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He also taught at Columbia University Medical Center.

In the late 1990s, he became concerned about the patients he was seeing at the hospital. Far too many in their 50s and 60s were having strokes, developing diabetes, falling down, and suffering fractures. Chris Crowley, a retired lawyer in his 60s, was one such patient. He was 40 pounds overweight and aging poorly until Lodge put him on a regimen of regular exercise and healthy eating that returned him to his 50-year-old self. Lodge and Crowley wrote an advice book entitled Younger Next Year: A Guide to Living Like 50 Until You're 80 and Beyond, which was published in 2004. They also wrote Younger Next Year for Women: Live Like You're 50 - Strong, Fit, Sexy - Until You're 80 and Beyond, Younger Next Year Journal, and Younger Next Year: The Exercise Program. He died from prostate cancer on March 10, 2017 at the age of 58.
