John Smith remains one of the best known figures in the history of England's exploration and colonization of North America. He helped establish Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in Virginia, and his encounter with Indian chief Powhatten and his daughter Pocahontas is legendary. Smith also charted the Atlantic coast of present day New England. Excerpted from John Smith, Explorer and Colonial Leader by Hal Marcovitz All rights reserved by the original copyright owners.
