Author Notes:	Alexander F. Skutch held a Ph.D. in botany from Johns Hopkins University and earned such honors as the William Brewster Medal from the American Ornithologists' Union and the Hal Borland Award from the editors of Audubon Magazine for "a lasting contribution to the understanding, appreciation, and protection of nature through writing." The author of numerous distinguished books on birds, he lived and studied birds for many years in Costa Rica.
