Author Notes: Susan Spencer-Wendel was raised by her adoptive parents in the West Palm Beach area of Florida. She received a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a master's degree in journalism from the University of Florida. She was a criminal courts reporter and feature writer for The Palm Beach Post. In 2011, she was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known as Lou Gehrig's disease. She quit her job and resolved to do everything she wanted while she was still able. Her memoir, Until I Say Good-Bye: My Year of Living with Joy, was published in 2013 and documented the year following the diagnosis. She died on June 4, 2014 at the age of 47.
