Author Notes: Mel Bartholomew graduated from Georgia Tech and worked as a Civil Engineer. After retiring from his own Engineering and Consulting Company, he started gardening as a hobby. Unhappy with the traditional single row victory garden method, he created the Square Foot Gardening method. His first book, Square Foot Gardening, was published in 1981. His other books included All New Square Foot Gardening, Square Foot Gardening High-Value Veggies, Square Foot Gardening Answer Book, and Square Foot Gardening with Kids. From the proceeds of his book sales, he created the Square Foot Gardening Foundation, which has spread his method throughout the world in an effort to help end world hunger. He died on April 28, 2016 at the age of 84.
