Author Notes: Amanda Berry was born on April 22, 1986. A day before her 17th birthday, she was kidnapped by former school bus driver Ariel Castro. She was imprisoned with two other young women Michelle Knight and Georgina "Gina" DeJesus. The nearly 10-year period of captivity included alleged beatings, rape, and starvation. Berry gave birth to a daughter on December 25, 2006 inside the house where the women were imprisoned. DNA evidence confirmed that Castro was the biological father of the child. They were rescued by neighbors on May 6, 2013. DeJesus and Berry wrote the book Hope: A Memoir of Survival in Cleveland.
