| Summary: | When Ricky's beloved Aunt Bella dies and Social Welfare threatens to put him into care, the overweight Maori boy and cantankerous Uncle Hec flee into the remote and rugged Ureweras. The impassable bush serves up perilous adventures, forcing the pair of misfits to use all their skills to survive hunger, wild pigs and the vicissitudes of the weather. Worse still are the authorities, determined to bring Ricky and Uncle Hec to justice. But despite the difficulties of life on the run, a bond of trust and love blossoms between the world-weary man and his withdrawn side-kick. This rattling good yarn has now been made into a major movie: Hunt For the Wilderpeople. Directed by Taika Waititi it features Rima Te Wiata, Sam Neill, Rhys Darby, Oscar Kightley and Stan Walker. |

| Author Notes: | Barry John Crump was born on May 15, 1935 in Auckland. He was a New Zealand author of semi-autobiographical comic novels based on his image as a rugged outdoors man. Crump worked for many years as a government deer-culler in areas of New Zealand native forest. He wrote his first novel A Good Keen Man in 1960, based on his experiences as a government hunter. It was a fictional account of a young hunter who had to suffer through a series of hunting partners who are often unsuitable for the job. This novel became one of the most popular in New Zealand history, and Crump¿s success continued with Hang on a Minute Mate (1961), One of Us (1962), There and Back (1963), Gulf (1964), A Good Keen Girl (1970), and Bastards I Have Met (1971). Crump died in 1996 of a suspected aortic aneurism. At the time of his death he was living at Ohauiti with his wife Maggie. (Bowker Author Biography) |
