Description
Summary:This special local history resource is shelved behind the upstairs Reference Desk. Small groups of Native Americans camped at site 36HU224 on the banks of Aughwick Creek in central Pennsylvania for over 8,000 years. They left behind traces of their presence that were revealed in archaeological investigations there. By carefully excavating the successive layers of deposits and intensively studying the artifacts and features at the site, archaeologists identified plants and animals in the local environment and outlined the activities that occurred at the site. Family or small task groups visited the site in the late summer and fall. They hunted, butchered and processed game animals for food and hides, bones and antler, using tools and weapons made of stone from nearby sources. They also collected a wide variety of nuts and other plants for food, fuel and materials. This was one of a number of such sites that native groups used throughout the year as they lived on wild plant and animal foods, a pattern that dates to the earliest arrival of humans in North America and that persisted even after the shift to farming and village life.
