Description
Summary:The History of the Boalsburg Tavern and the Woman Who Saved It tells the story of the beginnings of the grand stagecoach inn and tavern in Boalsburg. Built in 1819, the book is written to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the tavern. From its early days as an inn for weary travelers, through the Civil War, rowdy tavern crowds and quiet temperance ones, this book takes the reader on a journey through those years. It also looks at all the owners of the tavern until present day and tell how each of them wrote their own page in the tavern's history. Destroyed by fire in 1934, a Penn State alumna, Roanna Hill Winsor, buys the burned-out building and using excellent forethought and management skills, rebuilds the gem on the diamond in Boalsburg. Many of the nearly 60 images found in the book come from Ms. Winsor's photograph album she kept during the reconstruction. Duffy's Boalsburg Tavern is a significant piece of Boalsburg's history.
