Summary: Elsie Machle White was the coauthor of "Our Neighbors, the Chinese" [under the penname Vaughan White with coauthor Josephine Budd Vaughan] published in 1945 by Rinehart & Co. Born in China to Presbyterian missionaries, she was educated at Wooster University where she met Wilbert W. White. These two highly spirited college sweethearts married on December 6, 1912 in Endeavor, Pennsylvania. Five years later, he enlisted in the Air Corp and was trained as a pilot with the 147th Aero Squadron. He was killed in October, 1918 after receiving his orders to go home. As the only married WWI pilot with children, questions have been raised about his personal life. This book is a narrative biography based on personal letters. It is a compelling story of a woman dedicated to her mother's wishes, loyalty to her husband, illness and heartbreak.
