| Summary: | James Forten was part of the revolutionary generation that founded the United States of America. Born in Philadelphia in 1766, James volunteered to serve in the American Revolution--along with many other Black and Indigenous soldiers who believed in the ideals set forth by the Declaration of Independence. But after the colonies achieved their freedom from British rule, it became clear that the new government did not intend to fulfill its promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all. Undeterred, James believed the fight for freedom and equality was just beginning! ...Liberty's Forgotten Hero is a riveting reminder of our responsibility as citizens to fight for a more perfect union. |
