Description
Summary:"In a time when sacred texts are weaponized in culture wars or dismissed as relics of the past, this bold and compassionate book offers a different path: one of deep wrestling, radical interpretation, and spiritual honesty. Rabbi and teacher Caryn Broitman brings decades of experience guiding communities through the Hebrew Bible, this work invites readers-religious, secular, and spiritual-but-not-religious alike-into a living conversation with scripture. From the misunderstood story of Sodom and Gomorrah to the "boring" genealogies of Genesis, from the moral complexity of Jonah to the economic vision of Leviticus, each chapter reclaims the Bible as a source of wisdom, justice, and human connection. Drawing on Jewish interpretive tradition, personal narrative, and contemporary social issues, the author shows how even the most difficult or offensive verses can become doorways to deeper meaning-or, when necessary, be lovingly set aside. This is not a book of answers, but of questions worth living. It is for anyone who has ever asked, "Can I still read the Bible if I don't believe it all?" or "What do I do with the parts that hurt?" With clarity, courage, and grace, this book insists that the Bible is too important to leave to its least compassionate interpreters-and that its truth is not in its perfection, but in its power to transform"-- Provided by publisher.
