| Summary: | "Setting: Paris and Grasse, France, 1956. Élodie Limeaux's beloved mother, Aurore, died when Élodie was five, but Aurore's legacy as a legendary perfumer lives on in the exquisite fragrances she created for the family company, the House of Limeaux. Élodie longs to become as great a perfumer as her mother. However, in this male-dominated and misogynistic industry, she has had to fight every step of the way merely to rise to the positions of lab assistant at Limeaux, which is located in Grasse, in the south of France. Until now, Élodie's father, Fabrice, president and creative director of Limeaux, has refused to promote her to the rank of "perfumer". However, Élodie is confident he will love the perfume it has taken her three years to perfect. She has named the perfume Aurore, after her mother. Fabrice is unexpectedly scathing, telling her that her creations have no passion, and that she simply does not have what it takes to be a perfumer. Élodie is devastated by his reaction, but she has not worked this hard to give up now. Soon, an opportunity presents itself. The major investor in Limeaux, a Swiss banker called Caspari, is unhappy with the company's recent financial performance. He is threatening to outsource perfume creation to an American lab that produces scents for everything from toilet cleaner and leather goods to high-end fine fragrances. This outsourcing is the antithesis to everything the family company stands for and Élodie is desperate to find a way to stop him. She manages to persuade Caspari to agree that if the company wins the prestigious Technical Society of French Perfumers Essence of Paris contest, he will retain the in-house perfumers and give them six months to demonstrate an increase in profits"-- Provided by publisher. |
