LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT I'd like to begin by noting that this book was conceived, contracted, and composed upon the island of Manhattan, which  was sold, ceded, and surrendered by the native Lenape to Peter  Minuit in 1626, exactly 400 years ago.  I acknowledge and honor the many settlers, colonists, labor ers, and merchants who pacified, civilized, and capitalized this  city of my birth and that of my parents, wife, and children.  New York City was the first capital of the United States, and  despite its recent socio-political collapse, one has strong hopes that  the city will rise again and prove worthy of its magnificent history.
