Summary: "Thousands of books have been written about the latest and greatest diets that will help you lose weight and improve your health. But one of the most revolutionary dietary methods for taking your health to the next level is something that most people haven't thought about: fasting. Fasting is not about starving yourself. When done right, it's an incredibly effective therapeutic approach that produces amazing results for weight loss and type 2 diabetes, and can even help slow aging, prevent cancer, and improve heart health. In fact, nephrologist Dr. Jason Fung has used a wide variety of fasting protocols with more than one thousand patients, with fantastic results. In [this book], Dr. Fung has teamed up with international bestselling author and veteran health podcaster Jimmy Moore to explain what fasting is really about, why it's so important, and how to fast in a way that improves your health. Together, they make fasting as a therapeutic approach both practical and easy to understand. In [this book], you'll learn: why fasting is actually good for your health; how fasting helps you lose weight without slowing your metabolism (unlike cutting calories); why fasting works as a treatment for type 2 diabetes; who would benefit from testing (and who wouldn't); the various ways to fast, including intermittent fasting, alternate-day fasting, and extended fasting; what to expect when you start fasting. [This book] also provides tools to help you get started, including four fasting protocols, tips and tricks for managing common concerns during a fast, and recommendations on what liquids to consume during your fast for the best results. And because fasting needs to be balanced with healthy eating, 20 delicious grain-free recipes will help you eat right around your fasts. [This] is the go-to resource for anyone who wants to try fasting for health. It may be the missing link in your journey to optimal wellness."--Back cover.

Author Notes: Dr. Jason Fung earned his medical degree at the University of Toronto, where he also completed his internal medicine residency before heading to UCLA for a fellowship in nephrology (a branch of medicine concerned with the kidneys). He currently practices as a kidney specialist in Toronto. During the course of treating thousands of patients, it became clear to Dr. Fung that the epidemic of type 2 diabetes and obesity was getting worse. The prevailing dietary recommendations for reducing dietary fat and calories were clearly ineffective. In response, he founded the Intensive Dietary Management program (intensivedietarymanagement.com) to provide a unique treatment focus for type 2 diabetes and obesity that promotes simple yet effective dietary changes rather than focusing on medications.
